Fox Creek Will Provide Beaver Habitat

Location: Northeastern/Mid-Atlantic

Project Summary: Installation of seven miles of fencing and 4,000 cuttings was completed in September, 2003. With the help of six partners, Fox Creek is now protected from trespass cattle and in restoration.

Seven Generations Land Trust, Powder Basin Watershed Council, Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, Partners for Fish and Wildlife of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, USDA Farm Service Agency (USDA FSA)/Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODF&W), Burnt River Soil and Water Conservation District.

Results and Accomplishments

This project eliminates uncontrolled trespass livestock grazing from the riparian zone, reduces erosion, improves water quality, reduces water-borne nutrients, and improves instream aquatic habitat. It supports the long-term goal of demonstrating sustainable agriculture in conjunction with active beaver colonies.

Innovation/Highlight

The project has the goal of meeting the needs of all neighboring parties: the adjoining Daybreak Ranch, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and rancher Walter Forsea.
