The United States Coast Guard transferred a part of the Loran station to the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service to augment the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge System.

The Fish and Wildlife Service was then required to remove obsolete and dilapidated structures from the former station and establish a plant community that would provide suitable habitat for wildlife in the Atlantic Flyway. Site conditions were extremely inhospitable due to serious compaction from roads and buildings, high levels of soil disturbance from demolition and the natural extremities of wind, salt and temperature normally associated with coastal shoreline conditions.

The site referred to as the 2-Mile Beach Unit of the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge is being used as a stopover point for migrating song birds and grassland birds.

The new information developed will assist federal, state and local land managers, coastal advocacy groups and local citizens to successfully use native plants on other serverly degraded sites to create improved habitat for wildlife in a multi-state area throughout the coastal mid-Atlantic United States.
