Partners Protect 900,000 Acres Along the Grand Canyon

Project Summary: The Conservation Fund and Grand Canyon Trust are protecting nearly 900,000 acres stretching from the north rim of the Grand Canyon.

Resource Challenge

The project includes the acquisition of the Kane and Two Mile Ranches, which includes approximately 1,000 acres of private ranchland along the Vermilion Cliffs and grazing permits on 850,000 acres that span 100 miles along Grand Canyon and connect three national monuments, two national recreation areas, and eight wilderness areas. The deal ensures that the private ranchlands will be permanently protected from development and overgrazed lands will be restored.

Results and Accomplishments

With capstone grants from Acres for America, a partnership program of Wal-Mart and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, The Conservation Fund, a Washington DC-based nonprofit organization that combines economic and environmental objectives, will now exercise its option to acquire nearly 1,000 acres of private lands and federal and state grazing permits totaling nearly 850,000 acres. The Grand Canyon Trust will manage the land and spearhead restoration efforts to protect and revitalize the area’s springs, ancient forests, and native grasslands.

Innovation/Highlight

The Kane and Two Mile project area serves as the epicenter of the California Condor reintroduction program in Arizona. The region also provides habitat for the endangered Northern Goshawk and other wildlife including peregrine falcon, pronghorn, mountain lion, black bear, and Apache trout.
