COOPERATIVE CONSERVATION CASE STUDY

Location: Midwest/Northern High Plains

Project Summary: The Trust for Public Land is working on two projects along the lakefront of Lake Erie in Ohio: East Sandusky Bay and Mentor Marsh.

Resource Challenge

Of the 262 miles of Lake Erie shoreline in Ohio, only 15% is publically accessible. The Trust for Public Land is seeking to help conserve an additional one hundred acres at Mentor Marsh. Once completed this land would become a part of a conservation complex that includes Headlands Beach State Park, Mentor Marsh State Nature Preserve, and Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve.

In East Sandusky Bay the Trust for Public Land is working with Erie MetroParks, the parks agency of Erie County to protect approximately 125 acres along the Bay as part of the East Sandusky Bay Preserve Metro Park. This will be in addition to 1,200 acres of the preserve that TPL has already helped to protect.

Results and Accomplishments

Mentor Marsh has thus far received $1 million in CELCP funding, and will use a combination of federal, state, local, and private funding to meet its conservation goals. East Sandusky Bay has thus far utilized $2.5 million of its $4 million appropriated CELCP funding, and leveraged that amount with Clean Ohio Funds, Ohio Department of Natural Resources funds, and land value donations to protect 1,200 acres.

Innovation/Highlight

Erie County MetroParks was awarded for "Excellence in Local Government" by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminstration this past March for these acquisition efforts. It was the only local government to receive the award this year.
