Thirteen Mile Woods

Location: Northeastern/Mid-Atlantic

Project Summary: Conservation of 5,316 acres in northern New Hampshire acquired for working forests land conservation and public recreation.

Resource Challenge

The Thirteen Mile Woods property of 5,316 acres lies in northern New Hampshire along the Androscoggin River. The property will become part of a public and private conservation complex that includes lands conserved in1997 easement across the river, the White Mountain National Forest, Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge, and the state-run Nash Stream Forest. Recreational opportunities on the property include boating and fishing along the Androscoggin River, hiking, biking, horseback riding, and snowmobiling.

Results and Accomplishments

The conservation easementsfunded through the Forest Legacy Program wil be held by the State of New Hampshire, and allow for sustainable forestry and public access. The Town of Errol voted to acquire the property subject ot the easement, and anticipates using the harvesting proceeds to pay the cost of acquisition over time. The easement plus some state grant funding will lower the cost to the town and enable it to manage the land as a community forest. The community's tradition of timber harvest and their emerging tourism industry will both benefit from the Town's control of this scenic and productive land.
